JOUNIEH, JEITA GROTTO, BYBLOS, HARISSA
Start this day with a visit to the
fascinating Jeita Grotto, the largest caves in the Middle East.
Included is a boat ride on the subterranean river. During a stroll
through the old bazaar of souk, see the finest Lebanese handicrafts.
Lunch in Byblos in a seaside restaurant. Byblos is one of the oldest
towns in the world, where many civilizations left their mark, like
the Neolithics, Chalcolithics, Phoenicians, Amorites, Egyptians,
Romans, and the Crusaders. After a tour along the archeological
sites, there is time to look around the souk and the lovely 3000
year old harbor. Then, back to Jounieh, from where you will visit
Harissa by cable car. In this city on the mountain, the statue of
the lady of Lebanon is overlooking the wonderful bay of Jounieh.
CEDARS & BCHARRE IN THE NORTH
Departure to the mountains of the North.
There, visit the town of Bcharre, and the museum of Gebran Khalil
Gebran, Lebanon's most famous poet and painter, who was born here.
Continuation to the famous Cedar trees, said to be used by King
Solomon to build his temples, and national symbol, as one can see on
the Lebanese flag. These "Cedars of God" are approx. 1500 years old
! Take a walk and see the wood carvings, in this precious little
forest of trees that once covered all the mountains of Lebanon.
We'll have lunch at the riverside in an open-air restaurant in
Ehden. In the afternoon we'll go and look for the St. Antoine
Koshaya Monastery, that is tucked away between the vineyards, deep
down in the Kadisha valley. It has been in use by monks since the
12th century.
ANJAR AND BAALBECK
Today, visit one of the most important
sites in Lebanon; Baalbeck. After
breakfast, early departure to the Bekaa valley in the East. On our
way we will have a short break in the city of Chtaura, then we stop
by Ksara Winery, where you can walk around the cool caves, and see
the process of wine making. A tasting session after the visit, goes
without saying. Off we go to Baalbeck, which was the center of the
Roman world, and one of the wonders of the world. Let your mind go
back to the times otf this powerful empire while looking around the
overwhelming splendor of the well preserved temples of Bacchus,
Venus, and Jupiter; the biggest temple of the Roman Empire. Having
developed an appetite by then, we will stop for lunch in Anjar,
famous for its trout restaurants. The archeological site of Anjar is
our next destination. It is the only Omayyad city in Lebanon, built
by Arab Caliphs in the 8th century, and only discovered 410 years
ago! On our way back, there is a short stop in Zahle, which is
situated on a great spot, close to gorges and waterfalls. Take a
walk around if you like.
CITY TOUR IN BEIRUT
After breakfast, full day tour to visit
the center of Beirut with its famous Pigeon Rocks just before the
coast, the Corniche, Hamra street and the National Museum. Also, the
excavations and huge reconstruction projects in the downtown area
are very impressive. On the way back, there is time for shopping in
the famous market of Bourj Hammoud. Lunch in Beirut.
SAIDA AND TYR IN THE SOUTH
After breakfast, we are on our way along
the coast to explore the South,
starting in Saida, a city founded by the Phoenicians in the IV
century BC.Upon arrival we visit the Sea castle. One of the most
picturesque bazaars can be found in Saida, built by Emir
Fakherddine, where you can do lots of bargaining for souvenirs and
look around. Continuation to Tyr, the largest Phoenician seaport,
built on an island before the coast and conquered by Alexander the
Great in 332 BC. Today we can still find the remains of roman
architecture, like the Necropolis, Arc of Triumph, and Hippodrome.
Then we visit Qana, which is said to be authentic Qana of Galilee
where Jesus performed his first miracle turning water into wine.
Early Christian carvings can be found outside the village. On the
way back we have lunch in a typical southern fish restaurant on the
coast.
THE CHOUF
After breakfast, departure to the green
mountains of the Chouf. The old village of Deir El Khammar,
preserved as a national monument, has a lot to show us; gathered
around the fountain square are the abbey, a small mosque, the palace
of Emir Yunis Ma'an, an Ottoman house and serial with a nice
exterior. Then; on our way to Beiteddine, there is this
little childhood-fantasy castle on the side of the road, built by
Moussa, overlopking the deep valley. Inside is a wax museum that
shows you the traditional Lebanese way of life. Beiteddine is the
lovely oriental palace built by Emir Beshir Chehab in the 18th
century, with its elegant porches, arcades, fountains and abundance
of mosaics. Lunch in a typical restaurant of the area.
THE NORTH: TRIPOLI, RACHANA, BALLAMAND
Tripoli is the capital of the North,
which forms a huge contrast with modern Beirut. Here, you still see
the more traditional Lebanese way of life. Visit the Crusader's
fortress, the souk and the ancient harbor. Lunch in the old part of
town. Rachana, up the mountain, is called the museum village. Along
the entrance road you see modern sculptures lined up. The Basbous
brothers created this artistic atmosphere in the town, and welcome
you into their studios full of stone, wood and metal art objects.
The next place of interest is Balamand, where a Greek Orthodox
abbey, now a University, will be visited. |
